Dear Chair Kersavage:
The Lower East Side Preservation Initiative — LESPI — has reviewed the presentation materials for the referenced application. Although there are many factors that could be considered and commented upon in the current plans for Chatham Square, in accordance with LESPI’s mission we have confined our review to only the work proposed for the landmarked Kimlau War Memorial arch.
We have no objection to the proposal to move the arch closer to Chinatown’s historic core, where it may be better understood by passersby as being a part of the history of this important community, as opposed to its current position across the street from Chinatown’s historic core. We are not aware of any evidence that the arch’s current, exact position at Chatham Square is specific to its design.
Additionally, we strongly support the arch’s restoration, which will bring Poy Gum Lee’s design closer to its original condition and appearance, and allow it to stand for generations to come.
