Re: Proposed Installation of a Barrier-Free Access Lift
430 Lafayette Street – 430 Lafayette Street Building, Individual Landmark, NoHo Historic District LPC-24-11008
Dear Chair Carroll:
Regarding the proposed installation of a new barrier-free access lift at the subject property, Lower East Side Preservation Initiative — LESPI — has no objection to the design as shown.
We believe that the work will have minimal impact on the building’s historic fabric, is reversible, and is finished to visually blend-in as much as possible with the facade masonry.
The question has arisen whether the accessibility equipment on Colonnade Row should be regularized. Although there is a reasonable argument for this, we would be concerned that a pattern of identical equipment would become its own design feature. We believe that an assortment of minimally visually intrusive features would likely call less attention to itself.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Richard Moses
President
