Re: Certificate of Appropriateness Application for 538-540 East 11th Street / Free Public Baths

Dear Ms. Lewis-Coleman,

The Architectural Review Committee of the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative (LESPI) has reviewed the drawings prepared by Murdock Solon Architects in support of the Certificate of Appropriateness for the work at 538-540 East 11th Street, the Free Public Baths building.

LESPI understands the work to consist of the removal of non-historic blue tile from within the entryway of the building and its replacement with Ipe hardwood cladding. As this work appears to be confined entirely to non-historic portions of the building and will not involve any changes to the historic street facade, LESPI has no objection to the work as shown in the architectural drawings as it will not change any of the character-defining features of the historic architecture.

Respectfully,

Britton A. Baine
Chair, Architectural Review Committee
