How did the 19th- and early 20th-century immigrant communities of Germans, Italians, Irish, Jews, and many more who settled in this country make the journey to our shores?

On Tuesday, August 25, join Village Preservation, LESPI, and allied groups for a webinar, “From Village to Village: The Immigrants’ Journey to Greenwich Village and the East Village, 1880-1924,” where you take a trip alongside these intrepid people who started their journeys in far-off villages of Europe and Russia, and experience the numerous obstacles they had to overcome to get here.

And when they finally arrived, then what happened? The webinar will also explore how those who decided to stay in the Village began their transitions from newcomer to New Yorker, by examining the long-forgotten institutions and organizations that aided these migrants in and around our neighborhoods.

Still celebrating: the landmarking of the Church of St. Mary on Grand Street in April!

On April 7 of this year, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate the Church of St. Mary on Grand Street an Individual Landmark. In May, LESPI and the church parishioners joined for a wonderful celebration of the designation as well as the parish’s 200th anniversary. You can read more about it HERE. And we’re still celebrating!
