LESPI is dedicated to preserving the historic areas and buildings of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, including the East Village, Lower East Side below Houston Street, Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Bowery.

Events May 2023

interchangeably LES Street Festival: On Sunday May 28 be sure to visit the 36th anniversary of the fabulously Loisaida Festival, a celebration of NYC Latino culture with a parade, live music, food and more. It’s on Avenue C, also known as Loisaida Avenue, and it promises to be a wonderful time. LESPI will be tabling at the festival from 12-4pm (just south of E. 8th St.), so be sure to come by and see us! We’re celebrating Lower East Side History Month!

NY City Council Candidates Forum: On Tuesday May 30, at 6:00PM Village Preservation and the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative will hold a forum with candidates for the 1st City Council District, currently represented by City Councilmember Christopher Marte. This diverse district includes most of Manhattan south of Houston Street. The forum will be a unique opportunity to hear from candidates about their platforms as they concern preservation, development, and planning issues in our neighborhood. Candidates so far confirmed are Christopher Marte, Susan Lee, Helen Qiu, and Ursila Jung (left to right in photo). Register HERE for this free Zoom event.

LESPI Photography Exhibit: Stop by the Nine Orchard hotel in the landmarked and beautifully restored former Jarmulowsky Bank Building to see a very nice little exhibit of photographs from LESPI’s photo essay book, “LES: Lens on the Lower East Side.” And don’t miss the wonderfully ornate original banking hall, now bar, one Manhattan’s the great interior spaces. In celebration of Lower East Side History Month!
